Crimes Nearby: Assault, Fatal Accident and Stolen Oxygen Tank

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions. 

New Hyde Park

A structure fire was reported at the at 110 Jericho Turnpike at 1:58 p.m. on July 23. Reports indicate that it was an electrical fire. A ladder unit responded from the Floral Park Fire Department.

Roslyn

A Roslyn Heights man was arrested for assault on Friday, July 27 at 6:50 p.m. According to detectives, Third Precinct police officers responded for the report of a disoriented male walking in traffic in the vicinity of 210 Mineola Boulevard. When responding officers approached Omid Saidi, 29, he became combative and ignored their commands. The defendant then struck one police officer about the head and a violent struggle ensued. With further assistance Saidi was eventually placed into custody. The defendant was removed to a local hospital for evaluation. The injured police officer was also removed to an area hospital where he was treated and released for blurred vision and contusions and abrasions to the head. The defendant was charged with second degree assault and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned as soon as practical.

Westbury

Police have arrested a New Cassel man for an assault that occurred on Sunday July 22 at 12:40 a.m. in Westbury. According to detectives, the male victim, 22 was in front of 575 Cross Street with several individuals when the defendant Jose Martinez, 20, fired a single shot towards the group striking the victim in the right leg. The victim was admitted to a local hospital for treatment of his injury. Martinez fled the scene on foot but was located at his residence on Sunday July 22, at 11:55 p.m. and placed under arrest without incident. He is charged with first degree assault and five (5) counts of first degree reckless endangerment and third degree assault. He was arraigned on Monday July 23 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Hicksville

A Town of Oyster Bay truck collided with a fire department chief’s vehicle at Woodbury Road and South Oyster Bay Road at 11:43 a.m. on July 27. The extent of injuries were unknown.

Multiple injuries were reported stemming from a motor vehicle accident on North Broadway and Nevada Street at 1:57 p.m. on July 27. One minor injury was reported. A black male described as 5’8” wearing a red shirt and black tie reportedly fled the scene on foot toward the mall.

Woodbury

A serious motor vehicle accident involving one pedestrian occurred in Woodbury on Friday, July 27 at 11 am. According to detectives, a 2010 International delivery truck operated by a 43 year old Flushing man traveling eastbound in the parking lot of 8533 Jericho Turnpike struck Marilyn Ranschburg, 81. The victim suffered a fractured hip and was transported to North Shore Syosset Hospital for her injuries where she was pronounced at 12:35 p.m. by Doctor Perotta. Detectives report no apparent criminality with the accident at this time. The vehicle was brake tested at the scene.

A portable oxygen tank and carrier were stolen from a vehicle parked in Parking Field No. 5 on July 20.

Three female subjects, ages 43, 16 and 13, all from Rockville Centre, were arrested for the theft of $300 in assorted merchandise from Sears. The female 43-year-old was also charged with the endangering of the welfare of minor for facilitating the actions of the 13 and 16 year olds.

A resident from Linden Street reported on July 22 that his car was stolen sometime between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. Upon investigation by the police, it was determined that the complainant had forgotten where he had parked his vehicle. The car was found by police and returned to the owner.
