Crimes Nearby: Bomb Threat, Counterfeit Bills and Amputation

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Mineola

A police car was involved in a minor motor vehicle accident on Old Country Road and Russell Road on April 27 at 11 p.m. No injuries were reported.

New Hyde Park

A car overturned on the westbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway near exit 25 on April 22 at 3:59 p.m., flipping into the bushes on the side of the highway. New York State police responded to the scene. Injuries were unknown at the time.

A motor vehicle accident occurred on Jericho Turnpike and Fourth Street on April 23 at 10:01 a.m. Police and fire department officials were on scene with a confirmed pin with the fire department extracting.

The life of a 21-year old driver was  in New Hyde Park on April 27. According to reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle while headed north on Covert Avenue at a high rate of speed just past the Long Island Rail Road tracks at about 1:10 p.m.

A Queens man was arrested early Wednesday morning after leading police on a chase through Herricks and Williston Park in a stolen luxury car that required aerial support and the use of a canine unit. According to detectives, a 50 year old male victim observed the arrestee Donald G. Gunter, 19, of Jamaica, Queens rummaging through cars in New Hyde Park.

Westbury

Three suspects were placed in custody following a foot pursuit on the 1200 block alond Old Country Road on April 21 at 7:48 p.m.

An amputation was reported at 61 Circle Drive on April 25 at 3:50 p.m. The aided was transported to the hospital with “a finger or two” amputated according to reports.

A 36-year-old Hempstead woman was arrested for criminal possession of stolen credit card and identity theft on April 19. She allegedly made purchases using the credit card of a victim of a robbery that occurred in Garden City on March 2. There have been three previous arrests in this case. 

Garden City Middle School went into after a bomb threat note was found on the campus. The building and surrounding grounds was checked and no items were located. Nassau County Canine Officers assisted with the search. A student following the false threat.

Police arrested a Hempstead teen for allegedly making purchases at a store in Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City . According to detectives, Christian Hines, 19, of Hempstead, and another individual, who has yet to be apprehended, made various purchases at the Adidas store in the mall using 16 counterfeit $100 bills.

Two cars parked in West Hempstead, one on Birch Street and the other on Sylvan Drive, had their tires and rims stolen between April 21 and April 22.

Based on community complaints, Nassau County Police's POP/PEP Office conducted a Project 21 initiative on April 19 at the Getty gas station on Franklin Avenue in Franklin Square. Cops say they observed store clerk Ping Ruan, of Douglaston, sell alcoholic beverages to an underage person without asking for identification of age.

A Nassau County police officer was from a West Hempstead store at an earlier date. According to investigators, Thomas Welsh, 48, entered the Stop and Shop located at 520 Cherry Valley Lane in West Hempstead and secreted numerous pouches of baby food on his person using plastic bags and a bungee cord. The value of the merchandise was approximately $40. The Nassau County Internal Affairs Unit arrested Welsh Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at in Mineola.
