Crimes Nearby: Prostitution, Drug Robbery and Suspicious Fire

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

A suspicious fire is being investigated at a liquor store on Hillside Avenue in North New Hyde Park on December 29. Members of the Garden City Park Fire Department responded to an original alert of smoke at 10:06 p.m. in the basement at 1621 Hillside Ave. however found nothing.

Long Island Rail Road service was suspended on December 31 on three lines after a person was fatally struck on the tracks near the Covert Avenue at-grade crossing in New Hyde Park.

A resident at 33 Lahey St. in North New Hyde Park was reportedly exposed to boric acid on January 1 at 2:48 p.m. Emergency medical services, Nassau County special operations and a hazmat crew responded to the scene.

Roslyn Heights

A car accident occurred on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway between exit 36 and 37 on January 3 at 3:56 p.m. causing the right and center lanes to be blocked.

Old Westbury

A truck collided with an overpass on the eastbound side of the Northern State Parkway at Hillside Avenue on January 2 at 12:40 p.m. New York State Police responded to the scene. There was extensive damage t the truck with a debris spill on the highway and two lanes were closed.

Westbury

A fuel spill occurred at 84 Rose Ave. on December 29 at 8:32 p.m. when home heating oil spilled in the basement of a private residence. Nassau County Hazmat was notified and responded to the scene.

A car crashed into the woods on the eastbound side of the Northern State Parkway between Post Avenue and Wantagh Parkway on January 2 at 3:29 p.m. An entrapment with injuries was reported.

Hicksville

A Walgreens at 210 South Broadway was the scene of an armed robbery on December 29 at 8:24 p.m. The male victim was robbed of cash, cell phone and oxycodone outside of the store by two masked males.

A car accident occurred at Jerusalem Avenue and Walnut Lane on January 2 at 8:58 p.m. The aided was transported to Nassau University Medical Center.

A Uniondale man was arrested for a Robbery that occurred on April 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. According to detectives, Jesus Bellamy, 26, entered the business of Credit Solutions, 550 West Old Country Road and confronted the business president. After verbally demanding money for credit repair services rendered to the victim, Bellamy reportedly withdrew a handgun from his waistband and continued his threats for money. The victim was able to wrestle the gun from Bellamy who then fled the building. During his flight, Bellamy’s baseball cap was found at the scene. After forensic testing, a positive DNA match was made to the defendant. Attempts to locate Bellamy were unsuccessful until January 3 when he responded to an unrelated court date in Mineola. Bellamy was then placed under arrest by Bureau of Special Operations officers without incident. Bellamy is charged with first degree robbery, second degree criminal use of a firearm and second degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on January 3.

Bethpage

Two persons were arrested for an alleged assault on a police officer on Saturday, December 29 at 3:03 a.m. According to detectives, Second Precinct Officers responding to a fight at The Fife and Drum bar at 349 North Wantagh Ave., were approached by a male and a female outside. Anthony Pizaro, 23, of East Meadow and Michelle Chalen, 21, of Bethpage allegedly became irate and began fighting with officers when they were told they were not to re-enter the bar. One officer sprained his wrist attempting to handcuff Pizaro and a second officer injured his knee when he came to assist. Chalen refused to follow orders from officers at the scene, continually interfering with the investigation and arrest of her boyfriend. As officers were placing her under arrest she kicked and struggled with them. Both injured officers were taken to area hospital for treatment. Both defendants are charged with second degree resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Additionally Pizaro is charge with two counts of second degree assault. They were arraigned on December 30 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Garden City

A joint investigation between Garden City detectives and bank staff led to the arrest of a male 24-year-old from Hempstead on December 28 after he attempted to withdraw $4,250 from another person’s account by signing that person’s name on the withdrawal sheet and producing a forged license in that person’s name.

Garden City detectives arrested a female 19-year-old from Elmont and a female 23-year-old from Uniondale on December 28 for using a fraudulent credit card to purchase $1,300 in merchandise from Lord & Taylor. They were both charged with grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument.

West Hempstead

An undercover investigation by Nassau County Police led to the arrests of two unlicensed massage therapists at a West Hempstead spa who allegedly offered to perform sexual acts for money.
