Crimes Nearby: Robberies, Assault and Terrorist Threat

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

Nassau County Police are searching for an individual who robbed the 7-Eleven convenience store on Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park early Friday morning.

Carle Place

A robbery that occurred on July 26, 2013 at 1:45 a.m. in Carle Place. According to detectives, the store manager, 38, was forced back into the Panera Bread store located at 165 Old Country Road after closing by two black male subjects.  They then forced him to open the safe which was located in the office. The subjects then removed an undetermined amount of US currency and then fled on foot in an unknown direction. Subject one did display a handgun and is described as being 6’0” tall, 170 lbs. Subject two is 6’2” tall and 220 lbs. Both had their faces partially covered with bandanas. There were no injuries reported. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Westbury

A Westbury man was arrested for a robbery and assault that occurred in Westbury on July 20 at 7:38 p.m. According to detectives, a 62-year old male, and 57-year old female victim were in the parking lot of Home Depot located at 1320 Corporate Drive walking to their vehicle when they noticed defendant James Valente, 45, parked next to their vehicle with his front driver door open and resting against their vehicle.  When the male victim saw a fresh paint scratch on his vehicle door he began to argue with the defendant. The defendant became enraged and punched the male victim on the head causing a small laceration. When the female victim took out her cell phone to take a picture of the defendant, he grabbed her cell phone and pushed her to the ground. When a witness came to assist them, the defendant walked into the store, leaving his vehicle at the scene. The male victim refused medical attention at the scene.  No other injuries were reported. Third Squad detectives located and arrested Valente shortly thereafter at his residence. He is being charged with second degree robbery, second degree assault, third degree criminal mischief and fourth degree criminal mischief. He was arraigned on July 21 in First District Court in Hempstead.

A Westbury man was arrested on July 24 at 10:30 p.m. in New Cassel. According to detectives, Victor Perez, 48, a homeless man from Westbury, on July 23 at 11:43 p.m. made an anonymous call from a Westbury pay phone to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and stated that there was a bomb in the hospital. The call prompted a thorough search of the Medical Center, both inside and outside of the building, with no findings.  A subsequent investigation by detectives led them to Perez, who on July 24, 2013 was located and placed under arrest without incident. Perez is charged with making a terroristic threat and was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on July 25.

Old Westbury

An accident involving an 18-wheeler occurred on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway near exit 39 on July 20 at 11:05 p.m. taking out two lanes.

Hicksville

The Robbery Squad is investigating four Robberies that occurred between Friday, July 19, 2013 and Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 1:20 am in Bethpage, Plainview, and Hicksville.

According to detectives, the incidents are believed to be connected and occurred at the following locations:

  • On July 19 at 11:25 p.m. in front of 301 Hicksville Road, Bethpage, a 24-year old male victim was robbed of his cell phone and an undetermined amount of money and a back pack by two male subjects.
  • On July 20 at 12:50 a.m. on Forest Drive / Orchard Drive, Plainview, a 41-year old male victim was robbed of his cell phone and an undetermined amount of money by three male subjects.
  • On July 20 at 1:15 a.m. on James Street / Newbridge Road, Hicksville two female victims, 22 and 25, were robbed of their back packs and cell phones by two male subjects.
  • On July 20 at 1:20 a.m. in front of 40 Strong St., Hicksville, two male victims, 30 and 27 were robbed of their cell phones and an undetermined amount of money by two male subjects.

In all of the robberies, a handgun was displayed by one or more subjects who are described as male blacks or Hispanics and were observed entering a dark colored four door sedan. No injuries were reported

Garden City

On July 19 Garden City detectives arrested a male 19-year-old from Elmont for criminal sale and criminal possession of a half-ounce of marijuana at the Nassau Boulevard train station. During the investigation, an acquaintance of the subject, a male 18-year-old from Elmont was arrested for possession of a forged Florida driver’s license.

On July 23 officers stopped a vehicle with a defective brake light on Franklin Avenue. The driver, a male 41-year-old from Roosevelt, was placed under arrest for 26 outstanding driving license suspensions as welled as a revoked license due to an administrative violation.
