Crimes Nearby: Robberies, Thefts and Boating While Intoxicated

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

New Hyde Park

A fire was reported in a garage at 27 Eric Lane in North New Hyde Park at about 5:55 a.m. on Aug. 31 The fire was put under control at about 6:07 a.m.

A propane leak was reported on Aug. 28 at 3:39 p.m. at 15 Fir Drive.

Westbury

A robbery occurred on Aug. 25 at 2:15 p.m. in Westbury. According to detectives, a 37 year old male employee was working in Carvel at 5504 Brush Hollow Road, when a black male subject entered the store displayed a silver knife and demanded money. The victim complied and the subject fled the store southbound into the parking lot. There were no injuries. Proceeds were an undetermined amount of money. The subject is described as a black male, approximately 40-45 years of age, wearing a white t-shirt. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.

A truck fire occurred on the westbound side of the Long Island Expressway at exit 40 on Aug. 26 at 9:19 p.m. The lanes were reopened at 12:41 a.m.

Two men were arrested for a robbery in Westbury on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 at 11:51 p.m. According to detectives, a male and female victim (ages unknown) had just exited La Frontera Deli/Mini Market at 427 Maple Ave. in Westbury when they were approached by Jose Pena, 22 of Westbury and Jose Francia, 20 of New Cassel. Pena was armed with a machete and Francia displayed a handgun and demanded property from the victims. Francia then removed the female’s pocketbook from her arm and the both men fled on foot westbound on Maple Avenue to northbound Linden Avenue. Officers and the canine unit conducted an extensive search with the dog locating the men hiding in the side yard of a Dover Street residence where they were taken into custody. The Emergency Services Unit assisted with the investigation and located a loaded .38 caliber handgun and machete under a bush in the yard. The proceeds were recovered. Pena was charged with first degree robbery and third degree criminal possession of a weapon. Francia was charged with first degree robbery, first degree criminal use of a firearm and second degree criminal possession of a weapon. They were arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 30.

Old Westbury

A car overturned on the eastbound side of the Northern State Parkway on Aug. 26 at 5:44 p.m. near exit 30. One person was aided. There was no pin reported.

Jericho

An accident involving a tractor-trailer occurred on the westbound side of the Northern State Parkway between exits 35 and 36 on Aug. 27 at 11:37 a.m. where the truck stopped prior to the overpass and caused delays.

Bethpage

A four-car accident occurred at Stewart Avenue and Helena Avenue on Aug. 31 at 9:09 a.m. One driver was reportedly DWI.

Franklin Square

A robbery that occurred in Franklin Square on Aug. 28 at 7:45 a.m. According to detectives, a 40-year old female was seated on the curb in front of 640 Franklin Ave. with her cell phone on the ground and her hand covering it. She was then approached from the rear by an unknown male black subject who struck her, removed the phone and fled on foot. No injuries were reported and the subject is further described as 19 to 21 years old, approximately 5’08” tall, dark complexion, medium build wearing black pants and a blue shirt. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City

Police arrested a male 42-year-old from Roosevelt on Aug. 22 for the theft of four watches from Sears. The subject had fled the scene but was located in a nearby building. He was also charged with two outstanding Nassau County larceny warrants.

On Aug. 26 detectives arrested a male 31-year-old from Queens for grand larceny and falsifying business records. As an employee of a Franklin Avenue business, the subject submitted several false time sheets over a two-month period, resulting in him being paid more than $16,700 for hours not worked.

A Garden City man was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated on Aug. 24 in Glenwood Landing, cops said.

Police are seeking help in identifying and locating a person wanted in connection with a grand larceny that occurred in Garden City in May.

West Hempstead

On Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m., Shanice Jackson, 21, of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with grand larceny for shoplifting at Stop & Shop, located at 50 Cherry Valley Avenue in West Hempstead.

On Aug. 21, a person on Washington Street in West Hempstead received a call from an unknown suspect who she believed to be her grandson. He requested her to wire money and she complied. She later discovered she was a victim of a scam.
