Crimes Nearby: Stolen Salon Products, Robberies and DWI

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Mineola

Nassau County Police are searching for a thief who made off with $723 worth of salon products from a CVS store in Mineola.

Nassau County Police are asking for help in investigating a burglary at the Birchwood Court apartment complex in Mineola on February 19. According to detectives, at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, a 69 year old female victim returned to her residence on Birchwood Court and observed an unknown male Hispanic in her apartment going through the drawers of a desk.

New Hyde Park

A car accident with serious injuries was reported on February 19 at 8:46 p.m. at Hillside Avenue and New Hyde Park Road. Manhasset-Lakeville emergency service workers responded to the scene and reported one person unconscious inside the vehicle. The 52-year old female regained consciousness and was transported to North Shore Hospital in Manhasset.

A car crashed into a Charles Street business on the New Hyde Park-Floral Park border on February 19. No injuries were sustained in the crash.

Westbury

A car overturned on Old Country Road and Central Avenue on February 16 at 8:33 p.m. with a minor aided. An emergency service unit was requested to upright the vehicle.

Old Westbury

A smoke condition was reported at 223 Store Hill Road in the gym of Empire State College on February 21 at 11:11 a.m.

Hicksville

Police arrested a suspect at the Hicksville train station on February 21 at 5:34 p.m. who was involved in an armed robbery in Bethpage and possibly boarded the train at that location.

Emergency personnel were called to the Hicksville Train Station for an unconscious female on an eastbound train on February 22 at 12:52 a.m.

Roslyn

A TD Bank at 111 Mineola Ave. was robbed on February 17 at 1:46 p.m. According to detectives, a male white subject entered the TD Bank located at 111 Mineola Avenue and passed a demand note to the teller. The male teller, 33 years of age, gave an undetermined amount of U.S. currency to the subject who then fled on foot out the front door towards the rear of the bank. The subject is described as 5’10” tall, medium build, between 40-50 years of age, wearing a green hooded jacket, a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots. There were four employees and one customer in the bank at the time of the robbery. No injuries were reported. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the above crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Roslyn Heights

Three people were arrested Thursday night after a bank robbery in Roslyn Heights, one of whom was connected to a string of six Nassau County TD Bank robberies that began back in January.

A large power outage was reported at 1:26 a.m. on February 23.

Floral Park

A Medevac air lift was requested for a male burn victim from the scene of a fire at 275 Roquette Ave. in South Floral Park on February 22 at 3:23 p.m. The victim had burns to his hands, torso and head. According to detectives, the male victim, 53 entered his Roquette Avenue home and saw smoke coming from the kitchen. He discovered a wok containing boiling oil on fire. It had been left on the stove by a female resident. As he attempted to remove the wok from the house he fell splashing hot oil on his hands and face. As a result of the fall the carpet and couch caught on fire. The victim was able to extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the Floral Park, Elmont, and Franklin Square Fire departments. The victim was airlifted by Nassau County Air Bureau to the Nassau University Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.

Franklin Square

Police conducted a search on Ascan Road on February 18 at 12:45 a.m. for a black male armed with a firearm who reportedly fled from police after striking a house with a vehicle. The suspect was found and placed in custody at 1:12 a.m. at a CVS.

A Queens man was arrested on February 18, 2013 at 12:46 a.m. in Franklin Square for robbery. According to detectives, on February 16 at 4:30 p.m., defendant Quandell A. Cooper, 24, met his former girlfriend, 24 years old, on Dutch Broadway in Elmont. Cooper forced the victim to drive him to Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City in her 2006 BMW. He then forced the victim to drive to Queens and then return to the mall. Throughout the course of the drive Cooper punched the victim and threatened her with a hammer. She suffered minor injuries to her neck and shoulder. When they arrived back at Roosevelt Field the victim was able to escape from the defendant. She returned to her Franklin Square home and notified the police. Officers conducted a search for Cooper, but were unable to locate him. At which time a CAPER alarm was installed in the victim’s home for her safety. On February 18 at 12:45 a.m. Cooper arrived at the victim’s home and began to pound on the door in an attempt to gain access. She activated the CAPER alarm notifying the police.  Fourth Precinct Officers responded to the home and were able to locate the defendant nearby and placed him under arrest. The victim’s vehicle was also recovered at this time. Cooper is charged with second degree robbery, second degree assault and unlawful imprisonment. He was arraigned on February 18 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Garden City

A joint investigation by the Nassau County Third Precinct and the Garden City Police Department resulted in the arrest of a male 23-year-old from Roosevelt on February 15 for returning stolen property to the Garden City Lord & Taylor that was purchased with $300 in counterfeit money at the Manhasset Lord & Taylor earlier in the day. The subject was charged with two counts of felony possession of a forged instrument.

As a result of an investigation, Garden City detectives arrested a female 33-year-old at her Grove Street residence on February 16 for possession of a 2000 Mitsubishi auto that was reported stolen from a Miller Place location on February 4.

On February 17, police stopped an auto on Meadow Street for speeding (45 mph in a 30 mph zone) and for passing a red traffic light at Clinton Road. The driver, a male 26-year-old from Mineola, was subsequently arrested for aggravated DWI (.18 percent blood alcohol content), aggravated unlicensed operation for two open license suspensions, speeding, passing a red light, two lane/turn violations and for not wearing a seat belt.

West Hempstead

An unknown suspect stole a wallet with personal papers out of an unlocked vehicle parked on Kilburn Road South on West Hempstead between Feb. 13 and Feb. 14.

An unknown suspect(s) stole a tool kit, emergency kit and a GPS out of a vehicle parked on Walton Street in West Hempstead between Feb. 17 and Feb. 18.

An unknown suspect stole two iPods out of a vehicle parked on Marie Court in West Hempstead between Feb. 17 and Feb. 18.

An unknown suspect(s) damaged a mirror and scratched the paint on the trunk of a vehicle parked in the West Hempstead High School parking lot on Nassau Boulevard on Feb. 15.
