Gas Leak Reported at Mineola Bakery Tuesday Morning

Removal of oven at Portugalia Bakery reportedly caused leak.

Mineola firefighters responded to reports of a gas leak at the Portugalia Bakery on Willis Avenue Tuesday morning.

According to Mineola Fire Chief Joseph Pratt, two calls were received, one from 911 and the other from a man "that ran up to the fire house to tell us of a natural gas leak."

Chiefs Jeffrey Clark, Brian Santosus and Pratt responded from headquarters to the scene. Chief Pratt was told that a worker was removing a bakery oven and it caused a gas leak. The chiefs found an oven that was being removed fell off the dolly and had broke the gas line to the oven.

A mutual aid call was then made by Chief Pratt to the Williston Park Fire Department for an engine and to East Williston for a truck and National Grid to shut the gas off to the building.

The bakery and adjoining buildings were evacuated for safety. National Grid responded and secured the gas line and locked out the meter. The Mineola Building Department also responded and spoke to the worker about working without permits according to Pratt.

There were no persons reported aided at the scene.
