A Queens man will serve jail time, get probation, and pay restitution for setting fire to dumpsters on the Fourth of July, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Emmanuel Borg, 25, of Queens, was sentenced Wednesday to spend 60 days in jail, followed by two years’ probation on top of a payment of $1,400 restitution to the Town of Hempstead.

Borg pleaded guilty to two counts of fifth-degree arson in August.

In less than an hour, Nassau County Police responded to reports of fires at four spots on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead on July 4. At the final fire, Borg reportedly set fire to a bundle of newspapers in a dumpster in front of CVS Pharmacy.

Responding officers attempted to arrest Borg, who kicked his legs and refused to be handcuffed, police said. Officers were eventually able to bring Borg under control and arrest him, they said.

Restitution money will go toward a Town of Hempstead light pole that was damaged during the fires.

Jail costs too much. Burn his hands, badly enough that he will lose the use of them for a while and send him on his way. Lesson learned and the taxpayers don't have to pay for his room and board.
