Meningitis Scare at Mineola Sports Clinic

Total of 17 patients at Action Sports Medicine notified of tainted steroids used in treatment.

A Mineola sports clinic is one of three New York facilities that received steroids used for treatment of back pain that were contaminated with fungal meningitis.

A total of 17 patients of Action Sports Medicine and Pain Management received steroid treatment for pain management via an injection between September 21-25.

A statement from the clinic said that it had contacted all of its patients who had received the treatment and none had reported any adverse reaction to the treatment.

The Center for Disease Control reports cases in 23 states in total, tracing the shipments from 75 health care facilities back to the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

Action Sports’ statement said that it removed all of its methylprednisolone acetate steroid and was not using any other products from the New England Compounding Center.

The New England Compounding Center has also issued a nationwide recall for all of its products that were compounded at and distributed from its facility in Framingham.

The deaths of 7 people have been linked to the meningitis outbreak. In total, 60 people across 9 states – Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia – have contracted the disease according to the CDC and all had received steroid treatments.

The New York shipments were delivered to Dr. Sunil Betani in Mineola, Obosa Medical Services in Mount Vernon and Rochester Brain and Spine in Rochester.

The New York Health Department stated that all steroids suspected of contamination had been pulled from the market.

Meningitis is a inflammation of the brain and spinal chord with symptoms including headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. Fungal meningitis is not contagious.
