Mineola Fire Department Hydrant Program Gets First ‘Adoptee’

Eight-year-old Owen Sweeney becomes first Mineola resident to join program.

The Mineola Fire Department launched its Adopt-a-Hydrant program last week and immediately began receiving adoption requests with the first one coming from eight-year-old Owen Sweeney.

Owen, along with his parents Carolyn and Steven, posed with the chiefs and other members of the Mineola Fire Department behind the adopted hydrant which Owen has named Johnny Pump.

The Adopt a Hydrant program is designed to enlist the help of residents and business owners of all ages and ask them to make a pledge to adopt their local fire hydrant.

The task is simple: whenever snow falls residents are asked to clear the hydrant so that firefighters have quick access to it.

To adopt a hydrant, call 516-747-5860 or e-mail chief@mineolafd.com.

The department requests that residents and business owners provide their name, address, phone number and/or e-mail address and the location of the hydrant you would like to adopt. Once the department receives your request it will send out a confirmation “adoption certificate.”
