Mineola Fire Department Responded to 678 Calls Last Year

Chief Jeffrey Clark issues report for 2012-13 year.

The Mineola Fire Department has had a busy 2012-13 year, responding to 678 calls, up from 590 the previous year, according to the annual report issued by chief Jeffrey Clark Wednesday night during a village board meeting at the village hall.

The content of the report is as follows:

  • Automatic fire alarms in commercial buildings totaled 228.
  • Automatic fire alarms in residential homes were 31.
  • There were 20 building/ apartment fire alarms.
  • A total of 23 car fire alarms were signaled.
  • There were a total of 27 chief’s calls for carbon monoxide.
  • House/ garage fires totaled 40 of the calls.
  • There were 21 calls to the Mineola Fire Department for mutual aid and 18 rescue alarms.
  • The department had 81 calls for spills, carbon monoxide or gas leaks.
  • There were also 25 calls for wires and transformers.
The fire department calendar begins on April 1 and runs to March 31.

“We had quite a busy year, our busiest in quite some time,” Clark said. “We are pretty active and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.”

In 2003 the department had only 350 calls.

Chief Clark noted that the department is working with the fire marshall’s office to cut back on the frequency of some automatic alarms, singling out some businesses on the east end of the village and a restaurant.

“Fire marshal came in, worked with us and we’ve eliminated that problem,” Clark said. “So, we’re doing our best to keep the calls down and keep the men from having to respond to unnecessary calls and keep them safe.”
