Nassau Cop Shot Early Wednesday

A Nassau County Police Officer was shot responding to a burglary in New Hyde Park early Wednesday morning.

According to Nassau Police, the officer was responding to burglary at about 2 a.m. on Campbell Street in North New Hyde Park. Police state that the home had been targeted in the burglary.

A large portion of New Hyde Park had been closed off as 20-30 officers conducted a manhunt for the shooting suspects according to police.

Police placed two men into custody for questioning about the shooting and they are not searching for any additional suspects.

The officer was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital where he was operated on and according to police is currently out of surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The identity of the officer has been confirmed as 32-year old Mohit Arora, a six-year veteran of the department. He was struck in the hip by a 9mm bullet from the handgun.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Third Precinct Police Officer Mohit Arora who was shot in the line of duty early this morning while protecting and serving the people of Nassau County," Nassau Executive Ed Mangano said in a statement. "I commend Officer Arora and responding Officers who swiftly arrested the perpetrators while protecting our residents. I personally met with Officer Arora and his family at the hospital earlier today and thanked him for his heroic service and offered the support and prayers of Nassau County."
