Third and Sixth Precincts May Merge

P.O.P. Officer Nick Mosesso addresses rumors and concerns of residents as unit may face cuts.

As residents of the  are still struggling to figure out the future of their precinct and Problem Oriented Police unit, New Hyde Park  offered some of his thoughts about the issue at Thursday’s meeting of the Lakeville Estates Civic Association.

At the end of April, after rumors were flying about police precinct closures and changes to the POP unit, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said at a  that the Third Precinct will not be closing. He added at that meeting that there may be “changes in the way we operate” referring to the police department.

Amid these rumors were also rumblings that the Sixth Precinct could be closed.

“In all honesty, I don’t know if that’s a reality or not – the Third Precinct going away,” Mosesso said. “[There’s been talk] about the Sixth Precinct being closed, which is north of us, or the Third. Either way, one will get incorporated into the other. In the event that the Third Precinct’s the one to close, you’ll still have the same amount of police officers patrolling.”

Mosesso explained that the biggest impact that this would have would be more people being on patrol as if the two precincts combine into one building, less manpower will be needed at the stationhouse.

“I just wanted to let you know that even though we’ve read different things, we don’t have a definite yes or no as to whether any precinct will be closing,” Mosesso said.

Mosesso also talked about the idea of the POP unit being cut or changed.

“What I’m getting at is that if we do lose a member in our unit or two, it’s going to be left to the remaining people to pick up the slack,” he said, adding that for his precinct, “we’ve already been reduced from five to four in the past year or two.”

A Nassau County Police Department spokesman said regarding the potential POP changes and possible merging of precincts that, “as of now, everything is speculation. No one knows exactly what they are planning to do.”

Katie Grilli-Robles, press secretary for the Nassau County Executive, said, “Nothing has been finalized. I know of no merger between the Third and Sixth [precincts]. I know that they’re working on realignment of police department.”
