A Greener Bag For Yard Waste

Happenings in North Hempstead.

Biodegradable, paper bags for yard waste – grass and leaves – are available for North Hempstead residents.

Helping to preserve the planet, these bags may phase out the use of plastic bags, which town officials say do not completely break down into organic material when buried.

“Introducing biodegradable leaf bags to the town’s waste disposal stream may seem on the surface like an insignificant move but in reality it could pay major dividends if everyone participates in the program,” North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman said, in a statement.

Residents can purchase the biodegradable bags for $2 for a bundle of 5 bags at the Solid Waste Management Authority facility at 802 West Shore Rd., Port Washington and at the Town’s Aquatic Activity Center at Michael J. Tully Park, 1801 Evergreen Ave. in New Hyde Park.

This program will help to ensure that yard waste will not be put in landfills. Instead, it will be converted into compost.

After filling the biodegradable bags with yard waste, residents are asked to place them curbsides on their designated collection day.

What a photo op! How many town employees raked those leaves before you stood in front of them for the picture.

So what? Politicians and celebrities and students and committee members etc pose for photo ops to bring attention to their cause all of the time. If it brings attention to the cause, what's wrong with it. Doesn't anybody ever have anything positive to say about anything anymore? Kudos for having biodegradable bags available to us! It helps!
