Crews Deal with Slight Delay in Bruce Terrace Project

Delay at county level caused by conflict over existing sewer and drainage lines.

Work continues along Sheridan Boulevard and Dow Avenue in Mineola for the Bruce Terrace flood mitigation project.

Recently, the third component of the project, comprised of a drainage line that has to be installed on Dow Avenue between Pilgrim Street and Sheridan Boulevard, has been completed as well as the complete replacement of curbs, gutters and aprons on both north and south sides of the street and a newly repaved roadway.

During the August 7 meeting of the Mineola Village Board at the village hall, superintendent of public works Tom Rini reported that crews that day were working on restoring the utility strip between the curb and the sidewalk replacing top soil and laying down grass seed.

“They just started that late this afternoon so I’m sure that’s going to be ongoing,” Rini said.

Rini said that he is still waiting on Sheridan Boulevard interceptor, part of Nassau County’s contribution to the project, which is also delaying village portion “because we can’t complete the basin until that pipe is installed. Basically I can’t cut it in half because right now that water, if we were to have a heavy rain, it could go over Sheridan Boulevard and have to go through Bruce Terrace and I can’t cut that in half just yet because it won’t work properly.”

Rini explained that the crews “have been delayed while the county’s been making a determination on how to deal with a conflict that arose between the existing sewer service lines from the house and the proposed location of the drainage line; we ran into some conflicts there.”

There are two options available: either replace every service between the street and the homes, causing disruption to properties, or lower the pipe by two feet, which crews will be doing.

Rini said that due to the lower elevation additional materials are being ordered for the manholes since they would be sunk lower than originally expected. He expected the parts to be received within a week to 10 days.

Rini also noted that in the recharge basin itself, the village put into its portion of the project a drop-manhole and an additional 48-inch pipe to form the basin and will be looking to the county for reimbursement. Once the county begins its third of the project, it will connect to Dow Avenue and help divert water from Bruce Terrace.
