North Hempstead S.T.O.P. Program Collection

The North Hempstead Solid Waste Management Authority is scheduled to host the S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program on Saturday, June 11, 2011.

The event offers residents of the town the opportunity to dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The event, which will be held at 802 West Shore Road in Port Washington, will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., giving residents the opportunity to drop off their unwanted items.

Many people do not realize that ordinary household products, such as aerosols and cleaners, can be corrosive, explosive or even toxic if mixed indiscriminately with regular household garbage.

Items that can be disposed of at the event include, but are not limited to, electronic waste, household batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, air conditioning refrigerants, anti-freeze, paints and even weed killers.

Explosives, fireworks, ammunition, radioactive materials, and commercial or industrial wastes are not accepted.

In addition to many of these options, residents can also dispose of unwanted and expired pharmaceuticals on June 11 as long as all medications are kept in their original containers. These include prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, pet meds, vitamins and supplements, inhalers, and medicated ointments.
