Exotic Car Repair Shop Seeks Permit for New Location

Despite the down economy, one business in Mineola is actually thriving enough to expand – JSS Performance, an automobile repair shop that specializes in antique and exotic cars.

Business at the Roselle Street location has picked up so much that owner Bert Mota has actually occupied a larger space, moving from 10 to 43 Roselle St.

“They’ve needed to expand,” said attorney Marco Silva, standing before the last Wednesday night seeking a special use permit for the new address. “They can actually store more cars inside, a lot of these cars are high value cars and the people don’t want them outside.”

Mota had already obtained a special use from the board in 2006, but upon moving to the new location in November 2010, was reportedly unaware that he had to reapply for the new address as the permit was tied to the building and not the business itself.

It was only when he applied to DMV to update his auto repair shop license that they requested proof from the municipality that this was legal,” Silva said, describing the hearing before the village as a formality. “They’re just outside the notification zone of 400 ft,” he said, noting the business had moved 420 ft. down the road. “This is merely a movement from 10 to 43.”

The business does not offer collision repair or painting on the premises and there have been no violations or complaints reported. All original restrictions from the original permit would carry over to the new address.

The case was labeled with a SEQRA (State Environmental Quality Review Act) resolution along with a negative declaration.  The Nassau County Planning Commission will make a judgment on the case within the next thirty days which will then come back to the Mineola Village Board.
