Habitat for Humanity Home Slow to Rise in Mineola

Inconsistent volunteer schedule reason for long construction period.

About nine months ago the charity group Habitat for Humanity selected a home in Mineola as the location of one of their charitable endeavors. However, construction on the corner lot of Denton Avenue and Westbury Avenue has reportedly been languishing for some time.

Numerous volunteers have been sighted at the construction site, yet despite their presence, as of Sunday, only one story is framed in and a large section of the rear yard is still in a staging area.

According to Building Department supervisor Dan Whalen the group came to the village and discussed the possibility “about having a group of people in that home.” At first the initial plan called to reconfigure a small number of items in the building and allow for handicapped accessible. However, due to rot and termite damage the renovation turned into a demolition. Whalen stated that the group has all the proper permits for the work being done on the site.
