Judge Denies Dems' Court Order Over TOH Map

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

A Democratic injunction against the newly approved, redistricted Town of Hempstead map was denied by a federal judge earlier this week.

Democrats announced shortly after the town approved its new district map that they would be fighting the map in court, claiming that the map disenfranchised Hispanic and African American voters.

Newsday [paid link] reported:

Justice Leonard D. Wexler said the plaintiffs failed to show that by creating a second majority-minority district, a minority candidate would be elected. They also failed to prove Hispanics and African-Americans vote as cohesive groups.
Town of Hempstead spokesman Mike Deery said shortly after complaints from Democrats arose that the Republican-controlled town board "supported the redistricting proposal in a bipartisan manner."

"The new district lines meet all legal requirements of the Constitution of the United States, the State of New York Constitution and the Federal Voting Rights Act," Deery told Patch.

TOH Announces Child Car Seat Program

Hempstead Town’s Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program will begin its summer community car seat safety inspection schedule. The town’s Car Seat Inspection Team will visit communities across the township throughout the summer months and provide free car seat safety inspections.

The town's certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect and properly install child car safety seats and educate guardians on their proper installation. State law requires that children under the age of 8 are restrained in an appropriate child restraint system when riding in a motor vehicle.

Inspections take place by appointment only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. When registering for the program, guardians will be asked to provide the child’s age, weight, height and model of current car seat in use. Technicians can recommend appropriate car seats, and will check for notices of recalls or possible defects for the current model being used.

The summer inspection schedule is posted on the town’s website, www.TOH.LI.

Appointments are required and may be requested online or scheduled by calling the Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900, extension 217. Space at each inspection event is limited and appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.
