Mayor's Message: Summer, Movie Night and Birthdays

Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss invites residents to attend movie night in Wilson Park on July 19.

The following are the opening remarks of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss made during the public meeting of the Mineola Village Board on July 10, 2013:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I hope everybody’s enjoying their summer. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July. Last Friday Lou Panacciulli and the Nassau Pops put on a great, great musical event at Mineola Memorial Park  They’ll be back at Mineola Memorial Park on Friday, July 26 at 8 p.m. Please bring your friends, family and neighbors down to enjoy another great night.

Following last Friday’s concert we celebrated the birth of our nation with a great fireworks display. There were hundreds and hundreds of people enjoying the show both inside the park and on the surrounding blocks. It was a fantastic show and it was just a great night and I want to thank Mr. Scalero, our village clerk, Mr. Rini and the entire public works staff for getting it all together and making it happen.

A few weeks ago trustee Durham and I attended a ribbon cutting ceremony where we welcomed a new business to Mineola. Family Tree Realty is located at 43 Mineola Blvd. in the brand new office in the Raines Building. We wish them all great success and welcome them to Mineola.

Congratulations also to Troop 45 on their newest Eagle Scout, Dylan Perro. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is no small task and very few scouts actually accomplish it. Our congratulations to Troop 45 as well as the Perro family.

The sprinkler pools in Memorial and Wilson Parks have been redone and are operational. Rumor has it trustee Cusato’s been there galloping through the water. Take advantage of it, bring your kids down to Memorial Park if you don’t feel like going to Wilson Park; again, the DPW staff did a great job in getting that together and upgrading those two sprinkler pools for us.

Next Friday, July 19 the village in conjunction with the chamber of commerce is sponsoring “movie night in the park.” This will be the second time we’ve done this It will be held at Wilson Park near the pool, last year it was a huge success and there’s no doubt that this year again it will be an even better event so please bring your friends, family, neighbors, your chairs, your blankets and come down and enjoy the night.

Now that we are entrenched in the summer season, I ask on the hot days you look in on your older neighbors and make sure that they’re doing ok. As you head to the community pool, your pool, your friend’s pool or the beach, please watch over your children. There have already been a few tragic water-related incidents and we don’t need to have any more and if we can be a little bit more diligent, hopefully we could prevent a tragedy.

I’d like to acknowledge that today is trustee Durham’s birthday. Congratulations, George on hitting the half-century mark; we are having a little cake afterwards, after the meeting this evening so please stay, enjoy that and help celebrate George’s milestone with us.

Last but not least I’d be in even more trouble than I already am if I didn’t acknowledge that today is also my wife’s birthday. I offered to take you here to the meeting so we could your birthday together but for some unknown reason she decided not to; it is what it is. Patricia, happy birthday.
