McKevitt Speaks to Residents at Mineola Library

Assemblyman discusses plane noise, unemployment, economy with Mineola constituents.

With the New York Legislature in its summer recess, most of the representatives are at home enjoying the waning days of the summer. , R-East Meadow, is not one of them. Monday he happened to be over at the as part of his mobile summer tour where he planned to visit each and every town in the 17th district answering questions from the general public.

“People think it's like a big public speaking event but it's not," McKevitt said. “It's more of a one of one type of thing where I can address each individual's concerns."

One of the issues he talked about with residents were the complaints local villages have received recently about the .

“There has been a 40 percent increase in airplane traffic over our area in the past two months and people are not happy about. is aware of the situation and we're on the verge of pushing the Port Authority to do something about it.”

McKevitt added that the reason for the increase was because JFK Airport has opened up one of its runways for more commercial flights.

“It doesn't matter the reason its annoying to people and to homeowners who are trying to enjoy the summer in their backyards,” he said.

Another issue he discussed was the tremendous jobless rate in upstate New York.

“People think the economy is bad here but it is so much worse upstate. We need to get more people to work up there so we can ease the burden on our Long Island taxpayers.”
