The League of Women Voters will host debates between candidates running for federal and state offices serving parts of the North Shore of Long Island on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Manhasset, starting at 6 p.m. Get the details.

Free flu shots for seniors

 The free shots are available for North Hempstead residents 60 years and older at the following dates and locations:

  • Monday, Oct. 29, 2012. 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Clinton G. Martin Park (Room # 2), 1601 Marcus Ave., New Hyde Park, NY 11040
  • Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Sid Jacobson JCC, 300 Forest Drive, East Hills, NY 11548
  • Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Great Neck Senior Center (Room # 4), 80 Grace Ave., Great Neck, NY 11021
  • Friday, Nov. 9, 2012. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; Port Washington Senior Center, 80 Manorhaven Blvd, Port Washington, NY 11050

The programs is part of the town’s “aging in place” initiative, and is available through a partnership with NuHealth Nassau University Health Center. Appointments are required.  Call 311 or 869-6311 to register, or for more information.

Stop Throwing Out Pollutants

The town’s final Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) event is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4th at North Hempstead Beach Park, 175 West Shore Road in Port Washington, from 9:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.

The event allows residents to dispose of unwanted pharmaceuticals, electronic waste, paints, and sensitive documents.

Residents can return items such as aerosols, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, fertilizers, bulbs, thermostats, rechargeable and lithium batteries, TV’s, and computers. Please bring oil-based paints only. Latex and water-based paints, once dried out (usually 24-36 hours after the lid is removed), can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage.  Therefore, latex and water-based paints will not be accepted at the S.T.O.P. collection site.  Oil-based paints are considered hazardous, and will be accepted. 

The town will also accept unused and unwanted pharmaceuticals.
