Mineola Exploring Options for Pool Snack Stand for 2013 Season

Several local business owners reportedly interested in operating scaled-down stand.

For the second straight year there will be no snack stand in Wilson Park for the patrons of the Mineola Pool.

“The concession stand that we are in the process of rebuilding will not be ready for this year’s season,” Mineola Village Clerk Joseph Scalero said during a meeting of the village board on May 1 at the village hall. “It ran into a number of unanticipated design issues before we put a kitchen in there.”

The original snack stand burned down in 2011 and was to have been rebuilt, however since the original snack stand was built before the Americans for Disabilities Act, the new stand must be ADA-compliant.

The interior sizes of the bathroom and concession area all must be changed and enlarged. The village will also have to bring in a second water line from Westbury Avenue through the park to supply the sprinkler system with an isolated water supply.

In the meantime, for summer 2013, the village is exploring a more “simplified” version of a snack stand for pool patrons. In 2012 the village utilized a trailer with a mobile kitchen which was paid for by the insurance funds covering the snack stand. However, that is not an available option this year due to the prohibitive cost.

Scalero stated that the village has received interest from several local merchants on operating a stand using the building without a kitchen offering light snacks, beverages and ice cream.

The village board authorized a request for proposal so that the village could solicit proposals from those business owners to operate such a stand for the summer season.
