Mineola Mayor’s Message: Reelection and 2013-14 Village Budget

Mayor Scott Strauss thanks residents for support in recent village election.

The following are the opening remarks of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss made during the public meeting of the Mineola Village Board on April 3, 2013:

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I’m extremely honored to be serving you again as mayor. I wish to congratulate trustee Durham on being reelected and trustee Walsh on being elected to the board. There are many challenges and tough decisions ahead but I feel I can speak for the entire board when I say we are all up to the task. I’m looking forward to working with the two gentlemen as we help move Mineola forward.

I want to thank everyone involved in the organization night and thank you to the many residents who have offered to be members of the various committees that help make the government here in Mineola run. It was a great evening.

A week ago I attended the Portuguese Lions Club Annual Breakfast. It was jam-packed with friends and neighbors. I was there to give support to an organization that continually gives back to the community. If you haven’t attended this event in the past, I suggest you put it on your calendar for next year – it’s held every Palm Sunday at the Portuguese Center on Jericho Turnpike – you will not be disappointed.

This Saturday the MAA will be having its annual opening day parade through the village. It will step off from Wilson Field I believe at 10 o’clock in the morning. Immediately following the parade will be the opening season ceremony. Please come out and support and cheer our future hall of famers as they parade by. Each team is sponsored by a part of our community, either from a business or a community organization. These businesses and organizations donate funds needed to keep the MAA strong and growing. I ask that you show them your appreciation of their community involvement by supporting them throughout the year and shopping here in Mineola.

Last evening we held a public work session on our budget. If approved as is, our residents will see only a one percent increase. This will allow us the ability to increase our road resurfacing, increase our curb repair line, double our tree planting program and increase the equipment line for the department of public works in order to address some pressing equipment needs.

We’ll be having a public hearing on the budget next Wednesday, April 10 here at village hall at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
