Mineola Residents Cautioned About ‘Water Survey’ Kits

Bags originate from company peddling water filtration systems.

Mineola residents who may have received a clear plastic bag holding a container and billing itself as part of a “Neighborhood Water Study” are being cautioned that it is not part of any official survey or action by the village, but is instead a marketing tool designed to sell home water filters.

“This is a group that’s not illegal – they’re selling water filter systems, home filtration systems,” Village Clerk Joe Scalero told residents during the meeting last Wednesday at the .

The company is reportedly traveling around the village leaving a bag on residents’ doors containing a plastic vial and an informational sheet that it is conducting a survey of the water in the area.

While to many residents the bag might appear to be official or originating from the village, Scalero assured residents that it was not the case.

“I urge residents to do what they want but I would recommend that they not be worried about our water,” Scalero said.

The village’s water supply is tested annually by the health department and  “its quality is exceptional compared to most water systems on Long Island,” Scalero said. “This is just a sales gimmick.”

took a moment to remind residents to look for all proper forms of identification from workers coming to their homes. All Mineola village employees wear uniforms and should be able to present proper identification.

“More often than not you will have gotten a call ahead of time from our office saying ‘somebody needs to come to your house’,” Scalero said, adding that if residents call the village, the offices should be able to identify the individual if they are an employee without the resident having to open the door.
