Mineola to Provide Emergency Water Access to County Office Building

Village approves emergency use connection for West Street office.

As renovations continue on the Nassau County Office Building on West Street, otherwise known as the executive office building behind the , construction crews are busy updating and installing new systems in the building, which include water and fire protection.

Discovering that their existing connection was insufficient to provide the full range of water services required, the county recently requested that the Village of Mineola authorize a connection to the village’s water mane on Old Country Road to provide fire protection services to 1 West St.

Potable, or drinking water for the building is currently provided by the Village of Garden City through a connection which enters the building from 15th Street, but which “doesn’t have any hydraulic pressure and capacity after testing to also provide for the fire protection services,” according to Mineola Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini.

“We do have the capacity and the pressure to do that,” Rini said at the November 2 meeting of the about providing the water supply tap, which would be used strictly for fire protection services. “I don’t see any reason why not to do it since Garden City’s mane in that area cannot provide that.”

The measure required the village board authorization since the building is technically outside of the village.

There would be no no cost to the village as all costs would be paid for by the county, who would purchase the equipment and use their own construction crews. According to Rini the village would only provide an inspection at the time the mane would be tapped. Nassau County would also have to pay a $500 annual permit fee for the tap.
