Mineola Village Board Notebook: April 6

Other news from the April 6 village board meeting.

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, April 6. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Soccer Clinic

  • The board approved a request from the Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club to co-host a “Soccer in the Community” event from April 18 through April 21 with a rain date of April 22.
  • The “Soccer in the Community” group began in 2010 and is aimed at bringing children between the ages of five and seven who have not played soccer before “into the sport” according to Village Clerk Joe Scalero. Last year the program was .
  • “They would like to move it to an outdoor venue,” Scalero said. “They mentioned their kids playing on turf and you need fields for that.”
  • The week-long clinic camp is primarily advertised through the schools so Mineola residents as well as some neighboring communities may attend. The group charges a nominal fee pr child to participate.
  • The fields at are not in use that week due to schools being out of session.
  • Scalero suggested approving the measure on a trial basis conditionally on which fields would be in good condition in time for the clinic. “I may need to rest one and allow them to use another,” Scalero said.

  • The board approved the following new members to the : Andrew Carvalho (Co. 3), Alex Goncalves (Co. 1).
  • A death benefit payment from the Fire Service Award fund to the beneficiaries of deceased volunteer firefighter Albert Maiolica, Jr. pursuant to the Length of Service Award Program was approved.

Use of Village Facilities

  • A request from the Evening Star Quilters was approved to use the general purpose room for monthly meetings on the first Thursday of the month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the following dates during 2011 and 2012: June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1, October 6, November 3, December 1, January 5, February 2, March 1, April 5, May 3.
  • A request from the Evening Star Quilters was approved to use the community center general purpose room for monthly board meetings on the third Thursday of the month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the following dates during 2011 and 2012: June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15, January 19, February 16, March 15, April 19, May 17.
  • The Evening Star Quilters will hold their annual quilt show in the two general purpose rooms in the community center on Friday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The board approved a request from the Birchwood Court Owners, Inc. to use the community center to hold its annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, June 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.
  • The Mineola Portuguese Center was granted use of Wilson Field from Friday, June 10 through Sunday, June 12 and one soccer field from Saturday, June 11 through Sunday, June 12 for its annual carnival. Trustee Paul Pereira requested a follow-up to verify if the carnival would be officially open on the Thursday night or not.
  • The PTA was granted use of Wilson Park to hold its annual fourth grade picnic n June 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a rain date of June 22. Also granted was use of the park for the fifth grade picnic on June 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a rain date of June 21. The ’s annual kindergarten class picnic will be held in Wilson Park on June 17 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
  • A request from the to hold a AED/CPR training session in the community center general purpose room on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. was approved. Coaching volunteers are required to have safety training.

Building Department Report

  • The board approved two change orders for the rehabilitation of Well No. 5 project. According to Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini, the first change order is a $53,610 credit for a “line item contract” for unused funds. “We designate different types of equipment that needs to be maintained,” he said. “If we don’t use those line items, we then get credited back.” The second change order represents a $3,300 increase due to shorts found in the pump motors which must be rewound.
  • The board approved the closure of an unused water account at the Jackson Steel Super Fund site at 435 First St. “The problem is the EPA doesn’t own it, doesn’t lease it, the property, so they only have a way of reimbursing someone if there’s an actual usage,” Rini said, adding that all the lines are already disconnected. “Its one of those things that just didn’t come off our books, so its really a housekeeping item that we need to deal with.”
  • A request for a handicapped reserved parking space was approved to be place in front of 342 Wellington Rd.
  • Rini had met with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) about two weeks ago concerning the village’s expenditures during . Mineola expended approximately $40,000 in cleanup costs during the storms. The village’s request for reimbursement of funds was approved on March 31 and the village will receive approximately $34,800 in reimbursement. Rini stated it would would take six to eight weeks to receive the funds, which also includes money for the auxiliary police was included, but no exact number was available.
  • The village also received a check for $6,050 from the LIPA Wire Friendly Tree Program for the 2008 and 2009 tree planting programs.

Water Department Report

  • The water department’s total pumpage for the month of March was 83.88 million gallons, the highest day being 3.54 million gallons pumped with a daily average of 2.706 million gallons.

Other News

  • A public hearing on the has been rescheduled from its original date of April 13 to May 11.
  • The board granted a special use permit for a Mormon Church to on Willis Avenue. Village attorney John Spellman said that there was a recommendation to waive the appearance before architectural review board because of the “very minor” changes to the building which include enclosing the entrance. The permit was conditional upon the church being the sole occupant, not leasing the building to outside groups and instructing its members t use the designated parking lots.
