Mineola Village Board Notebook: Jan. 11

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Water Bill Payment Plan

• The village board approved a request by a Beebe Road resident for a water payment plan and to waive the usual late payment penalties.
• “On very rare occasions we have a time when a resident receives a water bill that is astronomical due to some defect,” Mineola Village Clerk Joseph Scalero said. “At that time due to financial hardship they may ask for a payment plan.”
• The resident’s account is usually in the $70-$100 range, however this bill was $745 due to an undetected leak.
• “We had discovered this in the course of testing all of our meters, equipment and reads,” Scalero said of the leak.
• The homeowner asked for a payment plan over a period of four months instead of the usual two, though Scalero said that “I would personally not recommend going over three because then you start getting into the next cycle or getting close to the next cycle.”
• Citing the resident’s “spotless” payment record, deputy mayor Paul Pereira said he had “no problem” with the four month payment plan, and his opinion was echoed by the other board members.

Court Report

During the month of December, the village justice court heard and collected the following fines for the number of cases listed:

• 50 moving violations for $4,570
• 11 village ordinances exclusive to motor vehicles for $2,025
• two housing violations for $1,200
• 1,682 parking violations for $100,437
• nine suspensions appearance fees for $595
• Total of $108,827

Other Board News

• The board approved the requirements contracts for the 2012 roadway improvement project with engineering firm Dvirka & Bartilucci.
• Public bids were authorized for village employee uniforms and for the 2012 tree planting program.
