The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

2011 Road Resurfacing Project

  • Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini asked the board for a final approval regarding the 2011 road resurfacing project, which he said had not been done due to a “mistake” on his part because of a misplaced letter.
  • Rini said that upon receiving the letter from the contractor on August 24, he “inadvertently put it in my project file not my board file.”
  • The village had held discussions with the current contractor, Pratt Brothers, to extend the existing contract for the 2012 resurfacing project.
  • “Inadvertently I didn’t get it to you for your final approval, which is the mechanism that I need for payment,” Rini said, adding that “was aware of it that we’re going to move forward with it this way.”
  • The misfiling has not caused any delay to any project and all pricing is to be the same as last year’s contract which is “basically getting this year’s product at last year’s prices,” Rini said.

Mormon Church Special Use Permit

  • A request from the Church of Latter Day Saints for a 90-day extension of a special use permit for 111 Willis Ave. for the was approved by the board.
  • “They have as yet not yet completed their application to enable me to issue them a permit and the possibility exists that their special use... will expire before then,” village building superintendent Dan Whalen said.

Other Board News

  • The board approved a request from the for the use of a general purpose room on the following 2012 dates from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on the third Thursday of each month, as needed, for executive committee meetings, subject to availability: January 9, February 6, March 5, April 9, May 7, June 4, July 2, August 6, Tuesday, September 4, October 1, November 5, December 3.
  • The financial reports for the village for the month of December is as follows: eight residential permits issued for $1,638; 13 commercial permits for $19,150; one applications for the board of zoning appeals for $500; one subdivision application for $2,500; seven plumbing permits for $915; 10 electrical permits for $800; 13 title searches for $1,275; 19 certificates of occupancy for $625; three copies of the village code for $86; 92 licenses for new businesses for  $32,510; for a subtotal of $59,964. There were court dispositions in the amount of $3,200 for a grand total of $63,164.
  • Mayor Strauss reported that the fire department’s Operation: Santa visited an estimated 1,500 children throughout the village over the 3 weeks preceding Christmas. “They put many, many smiles on many, many kids,” the mayor said, thanking Chief Gary Mazur and all who helped contribute to the success of the project.
  • Trustee Lawrence Werther encouraged residents to eat and shop locally in the new year. “We need to support the businesses, the merchants here in Mineola; many times they reciprocate,” he said.
  • The responded to 39 calls during the month of December, bringing the total number of calls responded to up to 479 since April 1.
  • The Mineola Kiwanis’ Superbowl pancake breakfast will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5 in the community center.
