Mineola Village Board Notebook: July 6

Other news from the July 6 village board meeting.

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, June 15. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Wilson Park Summer Projects

  • All spring sports have completed their seasons on the village’s ballfields and village personnel have begun working on rehabilitating field No. 3 at . Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini said the village had “dug out” the center of the field and replaced 130 yards of topsoil and began reseeding. “It’s a little difficult to get grass to grow in July but we’re going to do everything we can to make that happen, to make that field better,” he said.
  • Parking field No. 13 at Wilson Park will be receiving about 15 additional spaces as village crews restripe the area for the new layout of the lot. The lot originally held 125 spaces and the change will yield about 140 spaces using the standard nine foot parking space. Almost all the spaces will be straight head-in parking and the layout will be using the perimeter of the lot for the first time and allow for two-way traffic. Many of the 15 additional spaces will be located by the “angle” near the garage. “We should be able to have good movement throughout the parking lot,” Rini said.

Roof Projects

  • There have been some delays with materials for the village’s roof replacement project on the , and due to schools also doing reconstruction work on their roofs.
  • The materials would probably be available this week. Minor asbestos removal and work with flashing are also a part of the project.
  • The village hall and fire house roofs will be done first, followed by a full tear-down of the community center.
  • “That will definitely be an improvement to the building,” Rini said.

Building Department

  • The new apartments at 210 Old Country Rd. are nearing completion in terms of the framing and interiors. 
  • The garage plans for the new have been received and are being reviewed by the village. Construction will be starting before the end of the summer and a discussion of the demolition of the other properties will take place once the final plans are rendered.
  • The building department is also reviewing the plans for 111 Willis Ave. which will be . Building Department Supervisor Dan Whalen said that the review will be completed by end of the week and the building will be occupied by about first week of August.
  • has reportedly received their next permit to raise the elevation of their existing space by 25 ft. to two stories in the front of the building. There will be no additional retail space. “They’re just raising it to meet the height of the back of the building and mezzanine,” Whalen said.
  • In regards to halted construction of the new bank at 285 Jericho Turnpike, Whalen reported that the stoppage stemmed from problems with the steel about two and a half weeks ago. The problem is still going forward as the crews await new materials.

  • The Mineola School District will be using the for their special education summer program from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on the following Mondays: July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 and August 8.
  • A request from the Mineola Golden Age Club for the use of the community center auditorium on Thursdays rom Sept. 8, 2011 through June 21, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a general purpose room for line dancing instruction, an exercise room on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and a general purpose room for arts and crafts on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. was granted.
  • The Golden Age Club will also be using a general purpose room in the community center for a board meeting on July 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a general purpose room for new member registration on Thursday, Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • The following candidates were approved as new members of company 1 of the Mineola Fire Department: Nicolas Conway, David Dell Italia and John Reedy.
  • Mineola Lodge No. 985 of the Free and Accepted Masons were granted use of the Wilson Park picnic area for their annual family picnic on September 18 with a raindate of Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • will use the community center auditorium for its 2011-12 wellness education series “Health Update for Seniors and Their Families” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates: September 14, October 12, November 9, December 14, March 14, 2012, April 11, 2012, May 9, 2012, and June 13, 2012.
  • The board authorized two additional independent inspection companies to perform electrical inspections within the village: Alliance Electrical Inspection Limited and LI Electrical Inspector, Inc. The former had to include it on the list of authorized inspectors. This is not an endorsement of either company, merely allowing them to perform inspections.

The next meeting of the Mineola Village Board will be on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the .
