Mineola Village Board Notebook: June 15

Other news from the June 15 village board meeting.

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, June 15. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Village Clerk Training

  • Village Clerk Joseph Scalero will attend the Cornell Municipal Clerks Institute at Cornell University in Ithaca from July 17-21.
  • Scalero said the event was separate from the NYCOM training school and he was selected for the 3 year certification workshop program.
  • Only two other clerks on Long Island have the certification.
  • Scalero was also selected for a $400 scholarship by the New York State Municipal Clerk’s Association which covers half the cost of the program. Scalero also has another scholarship application pending.

The board approved a special use permit for the at 94 Union St. subject to the following conditions:

  • that the hours of operation be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and closed on Sundays
  • no food or beverages will be sold on the property
  • staff shall use offsite parking for staff and encourage patrons to use on-street parking in industrial area nearby
  • no activity will take place outside the building
  • proper emergency exits will be provided on the north side of the building and the current east side exit shall be closed
  • a maximum of 36 people will be at the facility at any one time.

Electrical Inspectors

  • Alan Gagnon, the vice-president of Alliance Electrical Ltd., came before the board asking for his company recognized as an electrical inspection agency.
  • He stated that he had come before the village in October but the building department informed him that they were restricting the number of electrical agencies to three.
  • Gagnon asked the board to reconsider the decision based on credentials and submitted 50 letters signed by electrical contractors in Nassau “who would like to see us approved.”
  • Gagnon said he was previously assigned to the village by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters.

Facilities Usage

  • The Mineola Youth and Family Services organization was granted use of the facilities from July 5 through August 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays and the use of the community center and a general purpose room during inclement weather for their summer recreation program.

Other Board News

  • congratulated senior Angela Athen for winning the mayor’s citizenship award at the recent senior awards breakfast. “She in a very large way has given back to the community in Mineola and is certainly well deserving of the award,” he said.
  • Congratulations were also in order for former village trustee John DaVanzo, who was inducted into the New York Veteran’s Hall of Fame on June 14. The hall was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from New York who had distinguished themselves in both military and civilian life. Mayor Strauss thanked DaVanzo for his service and “outstanding dedication to the community.”
  • A request from the to transfer $11,351.61 in year-end budget transfers was approved.
