Mineola Village Board Notebook: June 19

Other news from the June 19 village board meeting.

The Mineola Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, June 12. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Emory Road Park

  • The purchase requisitions for the Emory Road park playground equipment have been written and Superintendent of public works Tom Rini said that it was his hope to send out the purchase orders by June 21 to the two contractors.
  • Delivery for equipment is expected within four to six weeks, or the third week in July, at which time village crews will begin assembling and installing the equipment.

  • Resident John Carroll asked about the overtime spent by village employees during the recent Portuguese Festival behind the Churrasqueira Bairrada restaurant.
  • “Last year it was well-controlled,” he added of the crowd-control measures. “This time the barriers didn’t go up until (people) all lined the streets and then the barriers went up and then they weren’t maintained later.”

May Court Report

During the month of May 2013, the village justice court heard and collected the following fines for the number of cases listed:

  • 42 moving violations for $4,275
  • 25 violations exclusive of motor vehicles in the amount of $3,800
  • three housing violations for $400
  • 1,968 parking violations for $119,4458
  • four suspension appearance fees for $245
  • for a total of $128,178.

Use Requests

  • Winthrop University Hospital requested use of the community center auditorium for its free community wellness education program series from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. on the following dates: September 13, October 17, October 22, November 14, November 21. These classes used to be held at the hospital’s community outreach facility which is undergoing construction for the new diabetes research center.
  • Winthrop University Hospital requested use of the community center auditorium for its free community wellness education program series “Health Update for Seniors and Their Families” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: September 11, October 9, November 13, December 11, March 12, 2014, April 9, 2014, May 14, 2014, June 11, 2014.
  • The Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps. requested use of the community center auditorium to host a blood drive with the New York Blood Center from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. on August 29.

Other Board News

  • The board approved a “village investment policy” that gives the treasurer “some latitude in regard to transferring of funds between financial institutions in order to maximize the yields and get more interest for the village,” village attorney Ben Truncale said, adding that proper controls were set in place.
  • The village authorized a payout for unused vacation time an employee in the village treasurer’s office who is leaving for a position in a school district outside Mineola.
  • The board approved an annual $1 per hour stipend for the certified pool operators Michael Palumbo and Sean McCrave, effective June 12 to September 4. This is an annual request. Both men are certified to run the pool’s pump filtration system and are on call during the entire week they are on duty. Both men alternate weeks that they are on call. The board also approved a list of additional seasonal personnel for the pool and parks.
  • Repairs to the roof of the men’s locker room side of the bath house will soon be scheduled for off hours at the pool. The village is waiting on materials for the repairs.
  • The village’s summer recreation program is scheduled to begin on July 1. Rini reported that there are over 300 children signed up for the program and it is close to filling up.

The next meeting of the Mineola Village Board will be on Wednesday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the village hall.
