The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, May 16. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Memorial Park Cleanup

  • Village crews undertook a massive cleanup at recently.
  • According to superintendent of public works Tom Rini, the game tables and picnic benches had “taken a beating” due to the bouts of inclement weather and the .
  • All of the tables were repaired with new wood and sealer. Flower beds were also mulched and bushes trimmed.
  • Crews are also in the process of changing from soccer to baseball at and preparing both infields. They plan to reopen the field in a couple of weeks when seed takes root.
  • Crews went into the on May 16 for cleaning in anticipation of the opening in June.
  • “This is a busy time getting everything ready for the summer,” Rini said, noting some damage was sustained from juveniles entering the pool at night due to the mild winter.

Beebe Road

  • Beebe Road resident Ken Cotoroneo came forward to following up on the same question about repaving the road.
  • reiterated that funds for repaving were committed elsewhere last year and that he would look to do it next year, which starts June 1.
  • “We’re going to do what we can. You’ve got to give me time. It can’t happen overnight,” Strauss said.
  • The problem the particular section of the roadway suffers from is “scaling,” where the top layer is peeling off due to not being properly paved when initially placed.
  • The problem is not a structural issue with the roadbed itself, but merely the top layer.

Use Requests

  • The board approved a request from the Mineola Leisure Club for use of the auditorium on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a general purpose room for line dancing instruction from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. from Sept. 4, 2012 to June 11, 2013. This is an annual request.
  • The Mineola Leisure Club will use the community center general purpose room for a board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m. and a general purpose room for new member registration on August 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. These are additional requests. The village has advised them that in the event of inclement weather the summer recreation program would have to utilize one of the rooms to house the children and it would be unavailable to the group.
  • The Mineola Golden Age Club will utilize a community center on Thursdays from September 2012 to June 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a painting class.

Budget Transfers

  • Budget transfers for fiscal year 2011-12 were approved for the following funds in the amounts listed: general fund: $231,999.68; water fund: $64,761.45; library fund: $5,932.46; pool fund: $9,067.07.
  • The board approved a request from the for budget transfers in the amount of $6,429.06 from the following lines: $300 from hose and equipment, $400 from stationary and printing, $100 from badges and plaques, $625.99 from turnout gear, $250 from scott masks, $325.53 from tools, $300 from uniforms, $100 from OSHA medicals, $100 from fire prevention, $1.58 from rental equipment, $84 from elevator inspections and $81.98 from postage; $2,258.62 to legal fees, $274,88 to repairs – equipment, $76.39 to repairs – auto and trucks, $42.68 to dues and conferences, $16.51 to miscellaneous supplies; $3759.98 from utilities – gas to repairs – autos and trucks.

Contracts

  • A personal services security contract for the Mineola Village Pool and Wilson Park was awarded to O’Connell Protection Service at a rate of $24.50 per hour.
  • The board approved the purchase of three new handheld water meter reading devices, model Sensus AR5501 for the water department. According to Rini, over the last year several have failed. “We had, I think five of them, we’re now down to one,” he said, noting he was trying to “hold off” on purchasing until the next budget year. All meter reading is done by remote where the department plugs into the side of the home. Sensus is the sole proprietor of the technology of the village’s remote meters. The models currently in use are about 15 years old according to Rini and the new models are described as a significant upgrade allowing for future improved reading capabilities.

Other Board News

  • Following up on the , treasurer Giacomo Ciccone announced that the Mineola would after receiving the results of a rating call that day. The refinancing would take place during the week of May 21 with the refinancing of the 2003 serial bonds expected to save about $1.4 million.
  • The final accounting for the was just according to trustee Lawrence Werther who received the figures from owner Tony Lubrano that night.
  • Trustee Paul Cusato reported that has received approval in all its zoning applications.
  • The  will hold their annual family fun day on June 2 at the Willis Avenue field complex. Families attending are reminded to bring a dessert.
  • Boy Scout Troop 45 will hold their annual Father’s Day pancake breakfast on June 17. The event is an annual fundraiser to help pay for summer camps. The troop has 65 members attending camps this year.
