Mineola Village Board Notebook: May 4

Other news from the May 4 village board meeting.

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, May 4. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Road Closures

  •  will use several village streets for a devotional procession on Friday, May 13 from 8:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. using the following route: Garfield Avenue east to Willis Avenue, south to Second Street, north on Willis Avenue to Garfield Avenue, west to Corpus Christi Church.
  • Beebe Road from Jackson Avenue to Jericho Turnpike and the commercial area south of Jericho Turnpike to the adjacent village parking lot will be closed on Sunday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Kiwanis Club of County Seat’s third annual .
  • The one-way entrance on Willis Avenue to Field No. 2 and spaces No. 46 to 52 will be closed on Sunday, May 29 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. for Mineola Alheirense Cultural Center’s annual picnic.

  • Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini asked for authorization to rebid the contracts for roof reconstruction for the  and . In December the board had rejected the bids on the basis of the costs being prohibitive to the village. The authorization was to get prices only.
  • In the month of April the building department removed and trimmed over 40 trees, according to Rini catching up on work which was hampered due to the heavy snow.

Building Department

The village collected the following fees during the month of April:

  • 22 residential construction permits ($3,455)
  • 10 commercial construction ($3,600)
  • 2 applications for zoning board of appeals ($1,000)
  • 16 plumbing permits ($1,970)
  • 10 electrical permits ($1,000)
  • 13 title searches ($1,200)
  • 8 copies of the village code ($25.25)
  • 28 certificates of occupancy issued ($700)
  • 14 licenses for business ($2,180)
  • Subtotal of $15,130.25
  • Together with court dispositions of $3,250, the grand total is $18,380.25.
  • There were also seven notices of violations issued and nine summonses issues.

Village Employees

  • The village will hire a total of 105 seasonal employees for the summer recreation and lifeguard program. Rini said that 82 employees would be returning from last year and 61 applicants have applied for the remaining 23 positions. This year the village will also have nine water safety instructors.
  • Rini recommended that Jessie Ward be appointed as the new part-time cleaning person for the village hall, a move made after the current janitor requested a transfer to the sanitation department.

Budget Transfers

  • Budget transfers totaling $1,500 were approved by the board as follows: $1,000 from fire prevention to computers, $500 from fire prevention to scott mask.
  • A total of $34,658.93 worth of budget transfers were approved for “numerous lines” in the library budget due to damage to electrical work in and around  and increased retirement contributions.

Other Board News

  • Trustee Lawrence Werther said that he would be working with the Nassau County Village Official’s Association to get details on how and when any may be installed in the village and how the village will be compensated for having them in the village.
  • Trustee Werther also suggested that the board withhold any certificate of occupancy for the  in the strip mall at the corner of Herricks Road and Jericho Turnpike until the clock tower at the corner was fixed.
  • A request was granted from the  board to rename the community room in memory of Ann Hurley.
  • The  will use the Memorial Park gazebo and surrounding are on Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 2:41 p.m. to conduct their annual “Shakespeare in the Park” performance.
  • The Knights of Columbus were granted use of the  picnic area for their annual picnic on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The superintendent of public works will attend the Cornell Local Roads Superintendents School conference from June 6-8 at Ithaca College, pending admission for this year. The cost would be $700.
  • The annual lump sump payment of $240 for the volunteer firefighters length of service award program was approved.
  • A one year contract extension was approved with New York Paving for concrete requirements contract at the existing prices, terms and conditions.

Future Meetings

  • The May 11 village board work session has been canceled. A public hearing for the  will be at 6:30 p.m.
  • The May 18 village board public hearing and work sessions are canceled.
