Mineola Village Board Notebook: Sept. 7

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Community Center Roof

  • The village is still progressing with the work being done on the roof.
  • The village had hoped to have the project completed by Labor Day but had experienced several delays due to the severe weather.
  • Due to the ongoing construction and the use of the center following Labor Day weekend, “we’ve had to limit some of the activities there,” Village Clerk Joseph Scalero said. “We have tried not to shut it down throughout the duration.”
  • The rooms can still be used, weather permitting and the village has instituted a temporary policy that within 24 hours of scheduled use any group using the facility will be notified and given time to cancel depending on the weather forecast.

  •  praised the village for its recent bond upgrade from a1 to Aa, a move of one step.
  • “This increase will allow us to investigate the refinancing of some of our bonds and hopefully save us... a significant amount of money over the next several years,” Mayor Strauss said, crediting the “sound financial decisions” of the previous administrations. “Were in very, very good shape.”

Facilities Usage

  • The Evening Star Quilters will use a general purpose room in the community center for a workshop session on October 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The Mineola Senior Basketball group was granted use of the community center auditorium basketball courts on Mondays and Fridays from 1 p .m. to 3 p.m. The group consists of senior players.
  • Mineola Youth and Family Services were granted use of the community center auditorium on Mondays and Fridays from Sept. 9, 2011 through June 2, 2012 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • The board extended a contract with Louis Barbato Landscaping for the village’s tree planting program for an additional year. The option retains all pricing, provisions and stipulations as the original agreement. “So in essence we get this year’s trees at last year’s prices,” Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini said. The pricing is as follows: 51-100 Acer Campestre “Queen Elizabeth” Hedge Maple Trees at $173 each; 1-50 Maackia Amurensis “Amur Maackia” trees at $199 each; 1-50 Pyrus Calleryanna “Chanticleer Pear Trees at $133 each.
  • The annual heating, ventilation and air conditioning contract for all the village buildings and the library was awarded to Dynaire Service Corp, the current service provider, at a cost of $16,705.

Department of Public Works

  • During the month of July, the village justice court heard and collected the following fines for the number of cases listed: 55 moving violations for $4,125; six village ordinances exclusive to motor vehicles for $2,000; 19 housing violations for $11,200; 1,927 parking violations for $117,745; 5 suspensions appearance fees for $350 for a total of $135,420.
  • The financial reports for the village for the months of July and August are $50,660 and $31,330, respectively. The financial report for the department of public works for the period of June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011 is as follows: 280 residential permits issued for $90,472; 258 commercial permits issued for $360,898; one special use permit issued for $135; 539 construction permits issued for $451,505; 193 plumbing permits issued for $28,725; 182 electric permits issued for $15,650; 176 title searches for $23,175; 69 copies of the code sold for $4,725; 331 certificates of occupancy issued for $8,500; 23 planning board applications for $13,400; 251 licenses to do business for $50.895; 22 rental registrations for $8,275; subtotal of  $604,850. Combined with court dispositions of $54,020, the grand total is $658,870.

Other Board News

  • Permission was granted for Library Director Charles Sleefe, Head of Reference Librarian Cathy Sagevick and Librarian Meredith Minkof to attend the Public Library Association national conference from March 13,-17,2012.
  • The superintendent of public works will be attending the annual NYCOM Public Works Training School in Saratoga Springs from October 23-27.
  • The village will be advertising for the position of a building inspector.
  • The board approved special use permits for the following businesses:  and .
  • The village has been approved to . Some of the funds are already earmarked for the drainage issues in the .
  • Matthew W. O’Grady was approved as a member of the  Company No. 1.
