Mineola Village Board Notebook: September 18

Other news from the September 18 village board meeting.

The Mineola Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, September 18. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

2013 Road Work

  • The 2013 road rehabilitation contract was awarded to Pratt Brothers at a cost of $767,000.
  • There were six companies that bid on the project.
  • According to superintendent of public works Tom Rini, the contract is divided into two parts, one a base bid and a second which includes additional add-ons.
  • The work will center around Elm Place, Washington Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and Clinton Avenue from Elm Place to Roslyn Road as well as Roosevelt from Jackson Avenue to Clinton Avenue.
  • Any repairs to curbs and gutters will be made during that time.
  • The village had increased the budget line for road repaving in the most recent budget.

  • While the new Emory Road playground is currently being used by residents, the village still had some work to do regarding evening out the safety surface surrounding the swing area.
  • “It’s a little high right now and the kids have already dug out their feet marks,” superintendent of public works Tom Rini said, noting that crews would spread the surface around and a new sign would be made for the park as well.

2014 St. Patrick's Day Parade

  • The Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk & Queens will hold their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 1 p.m.
  • In 2011 the society requested a change in the parade route from Garden City to Mineola, with a route of beginning at the Supreme Court House, north on County Seat Drive to Old Country Road where they would turn left before a right onto Mineola Boulevard, heading up to Jericho Turnpike and heading east before ending at Willis Avenue.

August Village Justice Court Report

During the month of August 2013, the village justice court heard and collected the following fines for the number of cases listed:

  • 22 moving violations for $3,470
  • 25 village ordinances exclusive of motor vehicles for $4,750
  • 1,873 parking violations for $120,719
  • two suspension appearance fees for $105
  • for a total of $128,939.

Use Request

  • Sen. Jack Martins requested use of the community center auditorium on Sept. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to conduct a seminar on “Parents with Children with Special Needs” where child advocates and education specialists together to provide parents with information about available services.

Other Board News

  • The village board declared a a non-residential portion of the building at 40 Roselle St. as unsafe and being a fire hazard. The location was the site of a woodworking shop.
  • Conor LaCamera was approved as a new member of the Mineola Fire Department Company No. 2.
  • NY State was awarded a community development block grant from the department of housing and urban development (HUD) to provide financial assistance to buy out of homes that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The grant involves 124,000 homes across 13 counties. The project will be administrated by the NY homes and community renewal. The village passed a resolution consenting to the state’s homes and renewable community (HRC) agency being the lead entity for the grant.
