Mineola Village Board Notebook: September 5

Other news from the September 5 village board meeting.

The Mineola Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, September 5. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Natural Gas Contract

  • The village will issue requests for proposals to explore pricing and comparative benefits with various natural gas providers as part of the Long Island Municipal Cooperative Purchasing Group (LIMCPG).
  • About 3 years ago, the village was approached by the Nassau County Village Officials Association and asked to issue a cooperative bid for gas pricing alternatives, which was being done throughout the county in which all member villages could participate and which would provide an opportunity for residents and businesses to receive lower cost natural gas from individual dealers delivered through National Grid or Keyspan.
  • Many Mineola residents opted into the resulting bid and had “considerable” savings.
  • Since the last village meeting, the village officials association contacted Mayor Scott Strauss, notifying the village that the one-year contract had expired, but the company was still honoring the existing pricing structure.
  • However, due to the economy, the company has sent notice that without a new contract they may not be able to offer the same pricing for much longer without renegotiation.
  • The Village Official’s Association asked Mineola to issue the bid again since it took the lead with the original bid.

  • The village approved a bid from Island Fence to construct two new at-grade dugouts for the 90-ft. baseball diamond at Wilson Park.
  • The demolition of the existing structures and construction of the concrete slabs will be done by village personnel, while the contractor will install the fencing, gates and a galvanized corrugated roof.
  • Many facilities are eliminating the old-style dugouts that are below grade, citing drainage issues with clay running into the drains, causing backups.
  • “Most of the newer baseball facilities that you have out there do have at-grade dugouts per se,” superintendent of public works Tom Rini said, “and what they do is you use fencing and your concrete bas, put your bench inside that, this way you have a clear view through the dugout to the ball field for any spectators as well as when it’s not in use you’ll have a clear view could or possibly not be going on in that area.”
  • He added that he did not have sufficient funds in the budget to construct the at-grade dugouts at the smaller fields this year.
