Music Festivals Dates Announced and Record Senior Conference

The Town of North Hempstead has announced several key dates for upcoming free musical festivals for residents to enjoy.
Third Annual Kidstock Festival
The annual open-air family music festival, KidStock on Aug. 18 at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Grammy nominees Brady Rymer and The Milkshake as well as the Bari Koral Family Rock Band performed as well as Rock City, an interactive program presented by Bach to Rock that taught young children how to use musical instruments.Roscoe Orman, also known as Gordon from “Sesame Street”, who served as the MC for the event.
Other activities at the festival included free arts & crafts, face painting, strolling performers from The Big Apple Circus, a 50-foot bounce castle and bounce castle obstacle course, and athletic events like baseball, soccer and relay races provided by Unlimited Sports.
The day came to a close with a beach party hosted DJ Kev Dee and a drive-in movie, featuring the animated family film, “Escape from Planet Earth.”

Ninth Annual Family Fest Date Announced
The Town’s annual, end-of-summer, beachfront festival FamilyFest, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15 from Noon to 5:30 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington.
The festival will feature a New York Knicks Groove truck, kayaking, face painting, a petting zoo, hair braiding, spin art and live music from four bands:

- Denzil “Belt” Botus, a Steel Pannist and Calypsos artist, will kick-off the musical entertainment with his jazz and infectious reggae performance.
- Bach of Rock will follow, whose song list includes “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Rollin’ in the Deep”; “Superstition”; “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”; a medley of Bruno Mars and more.
- Minute by Minute will take the stage performing a tribute to Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers.
- Mack and Soul will wrap up the performances with a Motown and 60s musical revue.

International Music Night at “Bunky” Reid Park
The town will host its inaugural International Music Night at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury on Friday, Sept. 6. The concert with feature a trio of musical performances including Jose Trombone with popular Latin rhythms, Formul-la presenting Haitian Creole and Caribbean Kompa, and LC Entertainment performing popular Mo-Town tunes.
This FREE concert will get underway at 6:45pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair and a snack. In the event of rain, the concert will be held at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center at 141 Garden Street in Westbury.
Record Crowd at Aging Conference
Over 1,000 people attended the recent Second Regional Conference & Expo focused on helping seniors age in place and using technology to enhance their everyday lives on Aug. 21 at the “Yes We Can” Community in Westbury.
The conference focused on using technology to enhance the lives of the burgeoning population of aging Americans, 90% of whom, according to an AARP survey, wish to remain in their own homes as they grow older.
It was co-sponsored by Hofstra University’s National Center for Suburban Studies and North Shore LIJ Health Systems.
Along with Supervisor Kaiman, the panel of speakers for the day-long event comprised of several advocates for Project Independence who have been working in partnership with the Town for several years to improve and expand the program. They included Lawrence Levy, Executive Dean, National Center for Suburban Studies, Dr., Jacqueline Moline, who delivered the greetings for Michael Dowling, President and CEO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Dr. Marc Silver, Chair of the Department of Sociology at Hofstra and keynote speaker, Congressman Steve Israel.
It is estimated that by 2020, the number of older adults in the US will increase by 300 percent.
By calling 311, a resident can connect with a Project Independence staffer, who will help them find answers to a particular question, track down information or tap into valuable services such as health screenings, immunizations and information about managing medications. Project Independence, with offices in six Town locations, also offers caregiver support, social and recreational activities, support groups for those coping with illness, depression or loss, as well as volunteer opportunities.
Four breakout technology sessions were also held focusing on Healthcare, Social Media, Safety and Transportation/Mobility Management. There was also computer and iPad training all day, as well as Zumba, Wii Fitness and training on a Virtual Health website.
