Nassau Legislature Honors Mineola Intel Semi-Finalist

Leg. Nicolello bestows citation on Mineola student Bethanne Bartscherer.

Legislators from across Nassau County honored Intel semi-finalists named from their respective districts last Monday during the regular legislative session.

In addition to accolades already bestowed upon her from both the , and , student Bethanne Bartscherer received a citation from , R-New Hyde Park, who represents Mineola.

Bartscherer’s research project involved testing for the potency of various compounds in inhibiting the production of proteins that are released from cells as part of inflammatory response.

Working under the supervision of doctors at , Bartscherer tested the compound on three different human cell lines which are often the site of inflammation: lung, kidney and brain cells.

Lupis and rheumatoid arthritis are caused by such inflammation and the compounds Bartsherer tested may be used to treat these diseases.

Bartscherer says that she aspires to be a surgeon and will find out which colleges she was accepted into on April 1.

She has applied to Columbia, Brown, Yale, Harvard, Tuffts and Boston College among others.
