Shimmying for a Good Cause


More than a dozen belly dancers will bring their talents to Huntington Station Sunday to raise funds for families hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Michelle Anna Pagano of Manhasset will host the second annual bellydance fundraiser, Shimmies For Life,  at St. Peter's Lutheran Church to benefit the Jaime Whelan Foundation of Long Beach.

AC Failure Cancels Library Programs

Syosset Library has officially canceled programs for the next month as it waits for new air conditioning parts to arrive.  According to the Syosset Public Library website, all programs through June 24 have been canceled "due to lack of air conditioning." The heat has been getting to library-dwellers as temperatures rise outside.

'Larkfield' to Reopen After Major Renovations

The Larkfield, formerly known as Larkfield Manor, will reopen in July after a sweeping $8 million renovation.  A wedding and event staple in East Northport for more than 30 years, Larkfield Manor closed its doors in October to bring itself into the 21st century.

Huntington Cites Wastewater Cost Savings

Bugs are helping Huntington save money and improve wastewater treatment, town officials said this week. Town Supervisor Frank Petrone said that In-Pipe Technology's system of treating raw sewage through the use of bacteria had saved the town $68,000 and reduced nitrogen entering the plant by 67 percent.

Kim Kaiman Takes Leading Role in "Grease"

Making headlines of her own this summer, Kim Kaiman has been cast to play Sandy in the Port Washington Play Troupe production of "Grease."  Having stepped out of her “comfort-zone” when she auditioned for the popular musical earlier this month, Kaiman said she knew that this was a production she really wanted to be a part of after growing-up singing “Summer Nights” with her childhood girlfriends.  Singing "Summer Nights" and sharing the stage with Kaiman will be Rich Jacques, who has been cast as Danny. The Patch editor said he's excited to be making his first appearance on a Long Island stage with Kaiman.

Winner Declared in Lawrence School Board Recount

Nine days after Lawrence School District residents cast their votes for school board member, the district on Thursday officially declared Tova Plaut the winner. She the first woman to serve on the board in several years. “The voters of our community have chosen me as their representative and I will work diligently to help create a positive environment for our children and families.” A poll worker incorrectly tallying the official numbers the night of the election led to Jesse Lunin-Pack being declared the winner in the race against Plaut and Dov Herman. Two recounts confirmed what many poll watchers knew last Tuesday: that Plaut had won with a 37-vote advantage.

Levittown Golfer Wins NCAA Championship


She's only a freshman in college, but Levittown native Annie Park can play with the best of them.  Park won the NCAA Women's Individual Title last week in convincing fashion, finishing 10 strokes under par and helping the No. 1 ranked USC Trojans women's golf team win the NCAA National Championship.

Cornell Extension to Host Bamboo, Bonsai Classes


Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County will host bamboo and bonsai programs at the Horticulture Center at East Meadow Farms  in June.  Bamboo Basics: “Incorporating Bamboo into Northeastern Landscapes,” will be  presented by Professor Michael Veracka, chairperson of ornamental horticulture at SUNY Farmingdale State College. The event will take place on June 13 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will cost $5 for CCE members and $10 for non-members. The "Create Your Own Bonsai For Beginners Workshop," will include Award winning Bonsai expert and instructor John Capobianco. He will teach fundamental techniques for turning ordinary nursery stock into a bonsai specimen.
