North Hempstead Bracing for Same Sex Marriage Filings

According to North Hempstead officials, Town Hall could see "a rash of ceremonies."

With the passage of New York’s same sex marriage law on Friday, the is readying for a possible wave of gay couples looking to marry.

New York State’s Department of Health is currently updating marriage licenses and certificates, and will notify the Town as soon as that happens, a Town of North Hempstead spokesman said. 

“The law kicks in Sunday, July 24,” the spokesman added. “Our Town clerk, Leslie Gross is anticipating a rash of ceremonies on that day.”

That scenario could play out across the state, with officials preparing for thousands of gay couples marrying the first week that the law takes effect, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
