North Hempstead Clerk's Office to Open July 24 for Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Clerk Leslie Gross will begin issuing marriage licenses with support of union, staff and town board.

The Clerk’s Office will be open on the first day that same-sex couples can get their marriage licenses after the recent passage of same-sex marriage. said during a town board meeting Tuesday night that he anticipates the Town of North Hempstead Clerk’s Office is the only office to-date that will be open that day in Nassau County.

Town Clerk Leslie Gross announced at the end of the meeting during the public comment period that the Town Clerk’s office will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 24 for same-sex couples who have made appointments to get their marriage licenses. Originally, Gross thought that she needed to have a resolution to have these hours but the Town attorney said it wasn't necessary.

Gross was debating whether to be open or not that day when she spoke last week at the . She decided to be open that day after people kept approaching her asking for her to do this and the union, staff and board were behind her decision.

“We want to be part of history,” Gross said after the board meeting.

She already has four couples who have scheduled time to get their marriage license on July 24. A member of the couple or the two people can come to the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours prior to July 24 if they have any questions about documentation needed for a marriage license; this is a service available to all couples, Gross said.
