North Hempstead Issues Update on Storm Services

Shelters are open in areas including New Hyde Park, Mineola and Port Washington.

Emergency shelters in the are open for those who need to due to Hurricane Irene. The following is an update from the about the services available during this storm.

For all residents who live in a storm surge zone, pursuant to a county order you must evacuate by 5:00 p.m. tonight.  Storm surge zones are near our bays and involve the bay waters rising higher than usual.  Bay waters are expected to rise as much as 8 feet during this coming storm during high tide.

If you have experienced bay waters from Hempstead Harbor or Manhasset Bay rising onto your property during past storms, you are likely to be in a storm surge zone and you should evacuate to either a shelter or to a friend or family members home.

Please be aware, that once the storm winds rise to dangerous levels, you are directed to stay wherever you are for the duration of the storm. 

The Town of North Hempstead’s 311 call center will remain open to answer questions about the storm throughout the the storm and its aftermath, 24 hours a day.  Please be patient when you call, there is a high call volume.

In regard to emergency shelters, many of the high schools in our town are now open as shelters including New Hyde Park, Westbury, Mineola, Manhasset, Great Neck North and Great Neck South and Schreiber High School in Port Washington.  If you need more information about how to get to a shelter, please call 311.
