Town of North Hempstead Notebook: Snow Melting

The Town melted lots of its snow and its tax receiver was sworn in.

I'm Melting, Melting...

To reduce the amount of snow, the Town of North Hempstead Highway Department melted some of the area's snow at the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road parking lot on Jan. 29.

“We may not be able to keep the snow out of our town, but we can make some of it disappear without waiting for the sun to do the job for us,” said  in a press release.

To get rid of the snow, the Highway Department put it into a snow melting machine, which was able to melt 150 tons of snow per hour. Two thousand five hundred tons of snow were melted, according to spokesman Sid Nathan.

Tax Receiver Installed for New Term

In other recent news, North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman was installed on Jan. 25 for his new term.  

In this position, Berman oversees the collection of about $1 billion in taxpayer funds annually, according to a recent Town of North Hempstead e-newsletter. 

311 Calls for January

The Town of North Hempstead's 311 call center also answered 15,098 calls in the month of January, according to spokesman Sid Nathan.
