German Junior firefighters:

  • Mineola welcomed a contingent of 20 junior firefighters from Hamburg, Germany who arrived on August 3 for a training session with Mineola's fire department. The German group was in Mineola several years ago, with Mineola's bravest making the trip across the Atlantic for the exchange program last year. "They basically do the same things, but in some ways they do it differently," Mayor Jack Martins joked. "It's important that we allow our firefighters, and certainly (the ones from Germany) as well, for them to learn what they can from each other."

Addition to Winthrop University Hospital garage:

  • Construction of an addition to the three story Winthrop University Hospital garage on Old Country Road will begin within the next two weeks. It is estimated that the project will take between a year to 18 months to complete. The project will supply an addition 719 parking spaces to the garage.

Certiorari settlement:

  • The board approved a certiorari settlement for 150 Mineola Blvd. covering the tax years 2004-05 through 2010-11 in the amount of $7,700, less the pending 2009-10 tax lien of $4,227.75 for a total payment of $3,472.25.

  • 40 residential permits
  • 18 commercial permits
  • 15 plumbing permits
  • 22 permits for electrical work
  • 11 title searches
  • 35 certificates of occupancy issued

  • three copies of the village code sold to residents
  • total revenue: $302,995

The next meeting of the Mineola village board will be on Wednesday, August 11 at 6:30 P.M. at the village hall.
