Village Levies Six-Figure Fine Against Cleveland Avenue Home

Fines exceeding $100,000 put against Mineola homeowner.

The Village of Mineola has leveled six-figure fines against the owner of the property on Cleveland Avenue for multiple violations for the village building department code.

During a meeting of the village board on May 1 at the village hall, building superintendent Dan Whalen reported that the case regarding a house at 68 Cleveland Ave. that had been going on for about three years had been resolved in village court after it had been marked for trial for the third time.

According to Whalen, the defendant and attorney did not appear with the attorney stating that he was unable to locate his client. The trial was held in absentia with the judge finding the defendant guilty and leveling a fine of $102,000 against the property.

“There’s still things that need to be done inside and outside and if need be we’re going to have to go back and resummons this individual for exactly the same offenses for failure to straighten this out,” Whalen said.

Exact details of the violations were not available due to the matter being ongoing litigation.
