Work Begins on Station Plaza Flood Project

Construction to start at Field No. 1 and work towards Mineola station house.

Commuters using the will find parking is at an even higher premium now due to the start of the .

Speaking before the during its regular meeting on May 2 at the , Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini stated that the village was able to work out a schedule to carry out the construction with as minimal an impact on commuters as possible, as work is beginning in parking field No. 1, which is the smaller field to the north, and crews will make their way around to the station house where the drainage basins will be installed in the area closest to the platform and the railroad itself.

The village conducted the preconstruction meeting on the Station Plaza parking field and other improvements on the morning of May 2 and broke ground on May 7.

They also met with the , the LIRR as well as the project contractor and representatives from , being able to work out a means of moving forward with the project while still being able to accommodate their parking garage exit and allow for the delivery of oxygen which takes place at that location.

“There will come a point where we’ll have to close that off when it’s time to pave and actually do a little bit of pipe work,” Rini said, “but we’ll be able to work that out with the hospital.”

The superintendent added that he was still waiting on an access permit from the railroad which is required for the installation of three of the drainage basins.

“Even though they’re on our property,” Rini said, “they are in proximity to the railroad’s safety envelope.”

The superintendent also touched upon the , which is divided into four components: piping and basins work has to be done on Bruce Terrace, the Dow Avenue transport pipe and basins, the Union and Liberty Avenue Interceptor and reconstruction of the recharge basin.

The designs for the first three components have been completed and the village is finalizing the design on the recharge basin. Rini reported that he did receive a schematic and has to “fine tune” access points and is “hoping” to complete it shortly.
