Work on New Winthrop Garage Nearing Completion

Hospital to help reconstruct road, curbs on Fifth Avenue.

The construction of the addition to the three-story garage at 268 Old Country Rd.

During the recent meeting of the this past Wednesday, Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini said that he had met with representatives from Winthrop, which has agreed to reconstruct the surface road on Fifth Avenue.

The contractors for the project had utilized Fifth Avenue as a staging area as part of the agreement in order to construct the additional three stories.

The contractors will restore and reconstruct the road to the same specifications to the current roadways. The curb will be taken back to a one-foot curb and gutter allowing more roadway. The hospital will also be repairing an area of curbing between Fifth Avenue and Fourth Avenue for damages to the curb which occurred during the construction.

Reconstruction of the curbs will reportedly take place at or close to the end of the month and last about two or three weeks.

“The hospital has lived up to what they said they would do and that’s great,” Rini said.

Building Department supervisor Dan Whalen said the hospital may open the garage prior to roadwork being completed, but no formal request has been received.
