Chaminade Students Donate Supplies to Nursing Home

About 50 baskets of bathroom supplies are collected for Queen of Peace.

students got into the giving mood in preparation for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, donating in excess of 50 baskets of bathroom supplies to the Queen of Peace Residence nursing home of Queens Village.

"This has become a tradition where the student body has been tremendously generous and this year has been certainly equally as good and maybe even a little bit better than previous year," teacher Brian Anselmo said as he helped carry one of the baskets from the school to the activities and athletic center Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the Thanksgiving Mass Wednesday.

The event was co-run by the General Student Organization (GSO) and Emmaus, a club which seeks to engage students in service to the school and community.  While each homeroom fills one basket with supplies like paper towels, tissues, mouthwash, toiletries and other bathroom articles, Anselmo said that "we usually end up having much more than the baskets."  The school has been holding the drive for Queen of Peace for about the past 10 years.

Following the Thanksgiving Mass, about 50 students joined Anselmo at the end of the school day in delivering the items to Queen of Peace in one of the school's buses.  "They love it," Anselmo said of the nursing home staff and residents.  "Not only do they love the amount of (supplies) we give them, they also love the fact that there's a group of high school kids at a school who take time out of their day to think about them and to care about them."
