Crafting the Mustang Mural

Mineola residents band together to create new football field backdrop.

During the 2011 football season Mineola fans have been treated to a new mural on the south side of the field.

The prancing horses against the white background was the brainchild of residents Cindy Velez and Artie Barnett who came up with the idea for the mural after the 2010 homecoming.

Previously the stands were on the south side of the field and fans were able to look out on the field towards the homes on Colonial Avenue. When the stands were switched to the north side of the field, fans were faced with the industrial area along Liberty Avenue.

The project took place over the course of several days and involved numerous members from the community and schools including members Terence Hale, William Hornberger and superintendent Dr. Michael Nagler.

The project was also entered in MSG Varsity’s “Home Field Advantage” contest where the winning team from each school size category can win an air-blast tunnel customized with their school colors or a $5,000 gift certificate.
